ATM Security Tips

• Be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution when withdrawing funds.
• Always cover the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN.
• If you notice any suspicious persons or activity, come back later or use an ATM elsewhere. If you are in the middle of a transaction, cancel the transaction, take your card and leave the area immediately.
• If you need to access an ATM after dark, try to only use ATMs in well-lit, public areas, and have someone accompany you when possible.
• Refrain from displaying cash, and put it away as soon as your transaction is completed. Wait to count your cash until you’re in a safe location, such as a car or home.
• Safe-keep or securely dispose of your ATM receipts.

Look out for altered ATMs. Fraudsters can compromise ATMs by adding components to the card reader that allows them to collect your financial information. The added parts are called “skimmers,” which refers to customers’ bank account information being “skimmed” or stolen.

When visiting an ATM, check the machine:

• For tape and/or sticky residue on any part of the ATM
• For bulkiness on the card insert area or the PIN keypad
• For anything hanging from the ATM
• To see if the card reader is loose or comes off completely after jiggling it
• For microcameras that monitor you while you enter your PIN

If you notice that an ATM has been maliciously altered, or you notice other crime happening around you, find a safe location and report the crime to the police.

If you notice a skimmer component and the branch you are visiting is open, notify the branch so they can take appropriate action.
